Position Overview:
At Galen College of Nursing, Academic Advisors are at the center of the student experience. As an Academic Advisor, you'll serve as the primary point of contact for a caseload of nursing students - building relationships, identifying students who need support, and helping them stay on track from orientation through program completion. This role is a mix of proactive outreach, one-on-one advising, collaboration with faculty and campus leadership, and resource development. It's a great fit for someone who is energized by student success, comfortable with data, and thrives in a team-oriented environment.
What You'll Do
- Meet regularly with assigned students to build strong advising relationships and provide guidance throughout their academic journey.
- Monitor and proactively reach out to at-risk students including those who are readmitted, repeating courses, or showing early warning signs in target courses.
- Develop and monitor personalized advising plans in collaboration with students to support retention and program completion.
- Respond to escalated alerts for assigned students and coordinate with faculty, staff, and academic leadership on academic performance concerns and resource referrals.
- Participate in data collection efforts to identify trends affecting student progression and contribute to proactive retention strategies.
- Collaborate with the enrollment team and Office of Academic Records to support students during the enrollment process.
- Partner with campus leadership and the campus Retention Council on retention initiatives and campus-wide student success efforts.
- Help facilitate orientation and other student success events.
- Develop and host workshops and create advising resources based on your area of expertise, contributing to a shared library of resources for the college.
- Document all student interactions accurately in the Student Information System.
- Extended hours should be expected during pre-registration advising periods.
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field required - relevant professional experience in academic advising, student services, or a related field may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with a diverse student population. Comfortable using remote technology and virtual communication tools to connect with students.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage a large advisee caseload and multiple competing priorities.
- Collaborative team player who works well across departments and campus locations.
- Commitment to student success and Galen's mission of accessible, innovative nursing education.
