Description
Chief Executive Officer
Friends Care Community – Yellow Springs, OH
Executive Leadership | Senior Living | Mission-Driven Culture
Lead with Purpose. Build on a Legacy. Shape What’s Next.
Friends Care Community (FCC), a values-driven continuing care retirement community founded by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), is seeking a transformational Chief Executive Officer to lead through a pivotal season of renewal and growth.
This is more than an executive opportunity. It’s a chance to guide an organization with nearly 50 years of extraordinary service, exceptional clinical quality, and deep community trust. FCC’s bedside culture — as confirmed by residents, families, and staff — is nothing short of exceptional. Turnover is low, census is strong, and occupancy in independent and assisted living is full with wait lists.
And there is meaningful work ahead: recent leadership has created true momentum. Census has risen. Reimbursement and occupancy have improved. But financial performance has not yet caught up to clinical reputation. The leadership team is ready for reinvestment, and the philanthropic program holds substantial untapped potential. The next CEO will be asked to steward these opportunities with clarity, discipline, and deep relational skill.
We’re seeking a servant-leader with strategic range, financial capability, and authentic interpersonal depth. Someone who leads with humility and transparency. Someone ready to carry forward a mission grounded in simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship — and build the organizational strength to sustain it.
Why This Role, Why Now
Strong Foundation: CMS Five-Star health inspection rating. Low turnover. A full campus. A conservative balance sheet.
Values-Rooted: Founded by Quakers in 1977. First in Ohio to admit people with AIDS. Community-focused, inclusive, and affirming.
Meaningful Momentum: Census is growing. Reimbursement and occupancy have improved. The right leader can build on that trajectory.
Strategic Opportunity: The team, the finances, and the philanthropic potential are all ready for intentional investment and leadership.
Incredible Community: Yellow Springs offers a walkable, artistic, nature-rich environment that feels both peaceful and purposeful.
The Ideal Candidate Will Bring:
*Progressive executive leadership experience in senior living organizations
*Financial acumen and turnaround skills grounded in values-based decision-making
*A visible, relational, and transparent leadership style
*Alignment with FCC’s Quaker-rooted values and commitment to equity and inclusion
*A track record of building teams, trust, and culture
Leadership Style and Character
Visible and Relational: Known by name to residents, families, and team members, and present well beyond the office
Transparent by Default: Shares the real picture, including the difficult parts, before being asked
Collaborative by Instinct: Builds decisions alongside people rather than handing them down
Decisive Within Consensus: Draws out voice and discernment, then makes the call when the call is needed
Steady and Grounded: Calm and clear-headed amid competing pressures, and unpretentious in style
A Bridge to the Village: Connects the campus to the community that built it and still sustains it

Requirements
The Chief Executive Officer serves as the senior-most leader of Friends Care Community, accountable to the Board of Trustees for overall organizational performance, mission fidelity, and long-term sustainability. This is an integrated role. The Board seeks one leader who can hold both day-to-day operational competence and outward-facing strategic vision, while building a leadership team capable of carrying more.
Strategic Leadership
Advance the mission and founding values through organizational strategy and daily operations, translating stakeholder listening into a workable growth plan with a fifteen- to twenty-five-year horizon
Evaluate the service-line opportunities the community has requested — memory care, adult day services, home-based services, and independent living expansion — and establish the sequence and timeline for pursuing them, alongside campus master planning and return on investment
Partner with the Board on governance development, dashboards, and its return to strategic oversight
Operational Excellence
Sustain and grow health center census while protecting the quality standards residents and families count on, strengthening payer mix, admissions decision-making, and referral relationships across the region
Maintain and improve CMS quality performance, survey readiness, and regulatory compliance
Optimize labor productivity, overtime, and departmental accountability without compromising care, supported by benchmarks, dashboards, and shared operating data that make performance visible
Financial Stewardship
Bring the health center to sustainable operating performance, principally through continued census growth and disciplined payer mix
Implement robust financial controls, forecasting, and reporting in partnership with the CFO and Finance Committee, preserving liquidity and the organization’s conservative debt posture while positioning for necessary capital investment
Grow philanthropic revenue toward a meaningful share of total revenue, including an endowment strategy, and develop pricing aligned with market position and the value Friends Care delivers
Culture and Workforce Leadership
Invest in a senior leadership team that is cohesive, accountable, and confident in its authority, while protecting the bedside culture every stakeholder group named as the organization’s one non-negotiable asset
Treat retention as strategy; in a village this size, staff stability is read publicly as a measure of organizational health
Model transparency as consistent practice and lead collaboratively, consistent with the community’s tradition of discernment and consensus
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as a visible, trusted ambassador in Yellow Springs and throughout the region
Deepen resident and family engagement, including restoring structured resident voice across all levels of care
Carry the case for support to donors, foundations, and the village in partnership with the Board, while strengthening relationships with hospital and health system referral partners and regional aging services networks
Professional Background Core Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required
Progressive senior leadership experience in a senior living setting
Demonstrated financial management and regulatory compliance record within a regulated environment
Evidence of census, occupancy, or revenue growth achieved while maintaining quality
Proven ability to build, develop, and hold accountable a senior leadership team
Strong communication skills and a visible, relational leadership presence
Genuine alignment with the values described above, and facility leading in an inclusive culture that welcomes diverse voices

Nursing Home Administrator license preferred. Candidates with the ability and willingness to obtain Ohio licensure, or to lead in partnership with a licensed administrator, will be given full consideration.
Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Gerontology, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
Successful track record in philanthropy, including capital campaign or endowment development
Prior experience with campus master planning, renovation, or expansion projects
Nonprofit board partnership and governance experience
Experience in mission-driven or values-based organizations
