Stead Family Children’s Hospital is Iowa’s only children’s hospital nationally ranked by U.S. News.
Company History
The history of University of Iowa Health Care can be traced back to 1873, when patient service began. The small medical department opened a hospital in conjunction with the Sisters of Mercy Catholic order. This lasted until 1885 when the two groups separated due to different priorities.
In 1898, the University of Iowa opened a new 65-bed hospital. This was built on the same site as the previous hospital, on the east side of the river. The most impressive feature of this institution was a 200-seat amphitheater for clinical instruction.
While the hospital remained on the east side, the University built the 150-bed Children’s Hospital in 1919 and the Psychopathic Hospital (later known as the Psychiatric Hospital) for those with mental illness in 1920, both located on the west side of the river.
Then, in 1928 after receiving a donation for $2.25 million from two Rockefeller foundations, the University of Iowa built the 770-bed modern University Hospital on the west side of the river. This facility remains as the foundation of the modern UI Health Care.
Along with a history of excellent patient care, UI Health Care and our doctors have been a part of a lot of important advances in medical science. The most well-known of these are Ignacio Ponseti, MD, and his development of a method for treating clubfoot, Elmer L. DeGowin, MD, and his development of a modern-day blood banking method, and Roger Gingrich, MD, and his development of the first bone marrow donor registry.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
UI Health Care was first in Iowa to be designated a Magnet Hospital (2004) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the first in Iowa to be re-designated four times (2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023).
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Iowa. This distinction recognizes our ability to offer Iowans more cancer treatment options—including clinical trials of new therapies—than most U.S. cancer centers.
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has certified UI Health Care as a Level 1 Trauma Center for adult patients. ACS also has certified Stead Family Children’s Hospital as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center.
Our Burn Treatment Center is one of 77 burn centers in the U.S. (and the only center in Iowa) verified by the American Burn Association.
